While flood preparedness has always been important, in recent years it has taken on a new sense of urgency. The number of annual floods continues to rise, even affecting areas that are not typically prone to flood damage.

Flooding has a variety of causes which can lead to damage in different ways. However, after treating many homes that have been damaged in many types of floods, we have been able to isolate some common types of damages that occur in order to help homeowners be prepared.

Types of House Damages Common After a Flood

Foundational Damage. When the soil becomes waterlogged during a flood, it can cause the ground to swell unpredictably and shift structures alongside it. This means that homes’ foundations can become damaged during a flood, leading to cracking and uneven structural elements after everything settles.

Drywall Damage and Mold. Drywall that has become damaged in a flood should always be replaced due to concerns about contaminated water and the health effects of mold. Drywall is adept at hiding mold growth behind its panels, making replacement the only choice for safety.

Insulation Saturation. A house’s insulation is typically protected behind the drywall, but once that is damaged, the insulation is often next. Most types of insulation are highly absorbent, leading to decreased effectiveness at temperature regulation as well as dangers of mold.

Temporary Frame Swelling. A solid lumber house frame is surprisingly resilient to flood damage. Wood will typically swell and shift when it is fully saturated with water, but once it is dried and professionally cleaned, it will usually maintain its structural integrity.

Appliance Ruining. When it comes to appliances, every model is constructed differently, meaning a professional opinion is highly encouraged. Some appliances have panels of insulation within their walls, rendering them unusable after water exposure, while others will be fine if they are dried out thoroughly.

Furniture Damage. Damage to furniture can vary based on the materials it is made of. Upholstered pieces are often unsalvageable due to the health concerns of contaminated floodwaters, but metal, wood and glass pieces can often be used once more after they are professionally cleaned.

Hurricane Florence

A church ceiling covered in mold after Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina. This is the moldy Ceiling in one of the rooms of the church.

As a storm team participant, SERVPRO of Northeast Greenville County gets called when any major storm is brewing so we can prepare to travel and help those in need.

When Hurricane Florence hit North Carolina, SERVPRO of Northeast Greenville County was dispatched to help with the severe damage on the coast.

One particular church sustained roof damage causing major water damage. The water damage then turned into mold damage due to the extended time the church sat, because we had to wait for the water to recede. When SERVPRO was given clearance to enter the area, we then began our job as professionals to make the church look “Like it never even happened." This was a pretty large job, but there is no job too large we can’t handle! The church was back to safe working conditions in no time!

Humbling Experience in Humble TX

Storm Debris Houston, TX

So many of you know that SERVPRO is a nationally recognized and trusted brand in the field of water and fire damage. It clear to me now that we are a leader in Storm Disaster work as well.

SERVPRO of North East Greenville County was recently called by a local client to assist with his mom and dads flooded home in Humble, TX. We were hesitant at the time to pack up our fans, dehumidifiers and people and make the 21 hour drive.

After several conversation's with the team we decided that now was as good as any to make a difference for people. We traveled with a crew of 12, took 3 vans, a motor home as well as two generators and 3 trailers filled with equipment.

As we pulled into neighborhoods the feeling of purpose set in. People needed us, but we needed them too. During the day to day work that SERVPRO employees experience it is easy to get lost in the routine.

Storm was a reminder of why we do this work. It was a reminder of why SERVPRO cares. For our franchise this was a much needed sense of worth. SERVPRO of North East Greenville County was and is happy to be a part of the #houstonstrong community.
